CHAPTER TWELVE

It had only been two weeks since the day I’d brought Becca into Mason’s office and she ran out of our lives, but it felt so much longer. Ever since she had left, my brothers and I had been pretty much steering clear of each other, with the only exception being pack business. And that’s the only reason I was in Mason’s office that day. I stood looking out his window at the green lawns and cookie cutter houses of the neighborhood and wondered how everything around me could look so neat and orderly when everything inside of me was completely messed up.

Becca and I hadn’t had that much time together before she’d left us, but the mate bond didn’t care about that. I still desired her just as much--no, more --than I had that first night I’d seen her at O. Only now I didn’t know if I’d ever see her again, and that made things so much worse. My wolf wanted to hunt her down. He wanted to show up at her door and make her mine. But thankfully I had my rational human half to keep me from doing anything like that. Instead I just kept texting and calling, leaving voicemails basically begging her to see my side of things.

And the flowers. Can’t forget the flowers. I sent some every day in the beginning, a different kind of bouquet each time, hoping that I’d accidentally hit on her favorite. It’s the only thing I could think of. They weren’t letting me in at O so I could see her in person…

I ran my hand through my dirty blond hair in frustration as I turned back toward the room. What else could I do? I had to get my mate back. For the last couple of weeks I’d been feeling like I couldn’t stay still. I worked out more, hitting the gym extra hard, lifting way more than usual, but it didn’t make a dent in the nervous energy I felt. When performing my duties as the pack’s enforcer I had to really hold myself back. My aggression was off the charts.

I was in the process of coming up with some other ideas to help with my anxious and aggressive state when Mason finally decided to show up for his scheduled meetings.

“Hi,” he said as he entered the room. Right away, he took his seat behind the desk as if walking in had taken it out of him. His eyes were bloodshot and had dark circles beneath them. His face was pale and drawn. It looked like he had the opposite problem I had been having. Instead of having an abundance of energy to find an outlet for, he barely had enough energy to move.

“Rough night?” I asked.

He grunted and opened his laptop, pulling up his agenda for the day. “ Fuck .”

“Yeah,” I said. “First meeting’s a doozy.”

“Is she here?” He pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes.

“You probably walked right past her on your way in.
